Welcome to the Department of Urban and Public Affairs

Urban Design Studio

The Department of Urban and Public Affairs, College of Arts and Sciences, University of Louisville, offers three degree programs:  Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Urban Planning (MUP), and Ph.D. in Urban and Public Affairs.  The MPA program, which is offered in cooperation with the Department of Political Science, has tracks in Public Policy and Administration, Nonprofit Management, and Human Resources Management.  The MUP program, offered with the Department of Geography and Geosciences, has tracks in Land Use and Environmental Planning, Housing and Community Development, Spatial Analysis for Planning, and Administration of Planning Organizations.  The Ph.D. program involves faculty from multiple departments and offers two specializations: Urban Planning and Development and Urban Policy and Administration.

Several accelerated joint degree programs are available: MPA/MUP, MUP/Juris Doctor (with the Brandeis School of Law), and MPA/MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies (with the Department of Fine Arts).  A Graduate Certificate Program in Real Estate Development is currently under review and we hope it will be approved prior to the Fall 2009 semester.

The Department ’s academic programs are complemented by a research institute and several research centers.  The Department houses the Urban Studies Institute, which is a center for applied urban research and the umbrella organization for several centers, including the: Kentucky State Data Center (an official source of U.S. census and related data), Kentucky Population Research (responsible for official population projections as well demographic analysis for the state of Kentucky), Survey Research Center, Center for Environmental Policy and Management, Center for Hazards Research and Policy Development, and Center for Sustainable Neighborhoods.  A proposal for a Center for Real Estate Studies is currently undergoing review.  In addition, the Urban Design Studio is operated in cooperation with the College of Design at the University of Kentucky and Louisville Metro Government.  Located in downtown Louisville, the Studio is a venue for studio courses, workshops, exhibitions, and other activities that support urban planning and design education.

Core faculty in the Department represent a variety of fields, including city and regional planning, economics, law, political science, sociology, and public administration.  All faculty are actively engaged in research and publication and bring a high level of knowledge and skills to our interdisciplinary degree programs.  Faculty from other departments—including geography and geosciences, sociology, and political science—are also involved in our programs.  In addition, some courses are taught by adjunct faculty who bring a wealth of practical experience—in areas such as urban planning, nonprofit management, and labor-management relations—to the classroom.

One distinctive aspect of our programs is that they offer multiple opportunities for students to work closely with faculty on research and other projects.  Assistantships and fellowships are available for highly qualified students and provide stipends plus tuition remission and other benefits.

For further information about our academic programs, faculty, and research, please explore this web site.  For questions regarding admission to our degree programs, please contact our Graduate Student Advisor, Mr. Yani Vozos, at (502) 852 8002 or yani.vozos@louisville.edu.

Sincerely,
